Episode 32 - Tickled Pink Review

Welcome back! Thanks for joining us for Episode 32.

In this episode, Kristi and Dana are reviewing Tickled Pink by C.C. and Dami Almon. And, as per usual, we are also catching up on life, WIPs, & FOs.

"Tickled Pink - 2 designers, 4 indie dyers, 8 PINK-tastic patterns" is the latest book release by Mother/Daughter knitwear pattern writing duo, C.C. Almon & Dami Almon AKA JavaPurl & damisdoodles of the Geeky Girls Knit podcast. This book is a collaborative effort with 4 indie dyers (Neighborhood Fiber Co., Suburban Stitcher, Abstract Fiber, and Seven Sisters Arts) to showcase different shades of pink dye prowess with serious knitting skills. Check out the episode to find out our favorite things about this collection of goodies!

C.C. & Dami were nice enough to offer up a copy of the electronic book to give away to one lucky listener! Head on over to the Ravelry Group and check out the giveaway thread for details.

  • Dana spent her birthday on a road trip to Cincinnati. Before she left, she received a lovely new mic from Kristi! On the way to Ohio, she stopped at Black Mountain Yarn Shop and picked up a lovely Home Row Fiber Co. project bag and a Lux Adorna Knits Fun Size Sport Bundle in "Crazy Redhead". She also got yarn to make her lovely hostess a hat, some Magpie Fibers Swanky DK in "Velvet Underground". Whilst in Ohio, she visited the awesome fiber shop Silk Road Textiles and got lots of goodies including a new 12-dent reed for her Cricket Loom, a souvenir project bag with the Cincinnati skyline, two skeins of Gypsy Girl Creations Transitions gradient in "Pharaoh", a skein of MadeleineTosh Prairie in "Hi-lo", a skein of Berroco Sox in "1418", and skein of Lang Jawoll Color Superwash in "Ptie". When she returned from her trip, a special package from Kristi arrived with pretties from Interweave which included two skeins of MJ Yarns Kuan-Yin Worsted in "Jasper" and "Briolette", an awesome pin, and the most fantastic button.
  • Kristi had a yarntastic weekend 4/13-4/15. The first stop was at My Sister Knits in Fort Collins, CO. Kristi picked out some gorgeous yarn and Eddie treated her to it. What Kristi didn't know was that Eddie snuck a surprise gift of Lykke needles into the purchase too. Lykke is  Norwegian for Happiness and you can learn how to pronounce it here. The next stop was at Interweave Yarn Fest in Loveland, CO. Kristi bought a lot of yarn and some other goodies at the festival. The last stop was at Longmont Yarn Shoppe in Longmont, CO where she picked up an embroidery kit and a cashmere kit.

Episode 27 - Germ Free Zone

Welcome back! Thanks for joining us for Episode 27.

In this episode, Dana and Kristi are finally free of the viral plagues that have been giving them grief. We're catching up on Life, WIPs, FOs, and Stash Enhancements.

Dana has been enjoying a new video podcast, Are You Knitworthy?, which is hosted by Danni and Monica (who Dana mistakenly calls "Martha" because she's awful with names *derp*). Be sure to check them out! And as mentioned in stash enhancement, Monica sells lovely hand dyed yarn which you can find at Yarn Experiments

Don't forget to take advantage of the generous coupon code from Silly Sheep Designs. Our listeners can get 10% off any purchase of $10 or more with the code thecraftyhive. Thanks Wanda!

    • Dying

      • Kristi dyed 6 skeins of yarn with food safe cake dyes and YouTube tutorials for guidance. Four skeins are for her friend Nate based on Golden Girls photos. It's a super tardy Christmas gift. She also dyed a skein of light blue aran weight mystery yarn to be used on a squishy cabled hat for herself. And, because she accidentally soaked the wrong skein, another mystery skein was dyed. It was supposed to be red but the color broke in a very appealing way. Also included is a picture of a simple set of stitch markers made for Kristi's swap partner.

What We Couldn't Resist (a.k.a. Stash Enhancement):

  • Dana picked up the Sassy Cats I mini skein set from Ancient Arts Yarns to go with her Sassy Cats II set. There was a trunk show at Charlotte Yarn featuring the Greenville, SC dyer Monica who is behind Yarn Experiments. Dana picked up several goodies, including two skeins of Monkey Sock base in "Tortuga", another skein in "Quintana Roo", and a surprise for Kristi. She also snagged a skein of Charlotte Yarn's in-house yarn, Ava Lu, on the Get Your Stripe On base in "Leaping Lizards" which she's had her eye on for a bit.
  • Kristi finally found a wrist ruler to fit her child sized wrist at Colorful Yarns. It's made by I Love Handles.

Swap Stuff

Kristi participated in a Smash the Patriarchy swap in a Ravelry group. The goal was to make 3 things for your recipient which celebrate the awesome woman she is. They should be a large complex thing, a medium sized thing, and a small thing which could be purchased. Kristi got an awesome swap package based on one of Kristi's feminist hero's Rachel Maddow. Her gifter made her a STUNNING rainbow shlanket based on the find your fade pattern. She also made a dishtowel with a cross stitch of Rachel's signature glasses and bought her a Keep Calm and Watch Rachel mug.

The other swap Kristi participated in was from a FB group in which the point was to get local treats both fiber/yarn related and otherwise. Kristi's gifter was Monica Thoune from Up North Yarns. All of Kristi's Treats are pictured below. In addition to many fun goodies, Monica dyed up special yarns just for Kristi to match her likes. ~swoon~

What We're Working On (a.k.a. WIPs):

What We've Finished (a.k.a. FOs):

What We Couldn't Resist (a.k.a. Stash Enhancement):

  • Dana got lots of fun yarn during the road trip (click here to see all of it!). Most of it was for a Find Your Fade Shawl. The picture below shows the final selections in the order they will be used in the shawl. She also picked up an awesome crewel embroidery kit of an adorable sleeping kitty (which you can get here). See below for a snapshot of my small start on the embroidery!

  • Kristi purchased a set of planet stitch markers from Wanda at Silly Sheep Designs. Kristi also purchased a shawl pin from Gen at Ridiculously Cute. Kristi won a prize of sparkle yarn in the coral reef colorway and a Knitter's Pride needle Sampler for a KAL from Maylin at Tri'CoTerie. Kristi also went to Charlotte Yarn for the launch of their in house line of yarn called Ava Lu. She bought 2 skeins of sparkle yarn and a third skein of Junkyarn which is also created by a NC dyer.

All the gifts <3

As Kristi's departure for Denver loomed large, many of her wonderful friends gave her some thoughtful and generous gifts. Susan gave her a gorgeous crocheted hat and a lovely skein of Miss Babs Yowza in the Joan of Arc colorway. Our good friend Amy asked Wanda to make some crafty hive stitch markers and gave us each a set! Kristi's friend Loretta generously shared a bunch of her yarn crawl winnings with Kristi. Some of the ladies Kristi's knits with in Gastonia got her some lovely gifts including a special yarn colorway by Crystal at Mythic Cache Fibers, Kristi's favorite loose leaf tea, and handmade goodies like project bags and stitch markers. Kristi's really good friend Jenny sent her a package of yarny and nerdy goodness from Stitches Midwest. The package even included 2 confetti poppers for Kristi to celebrate leaving her old place and arriving at the new one! Last but definitely not least is the amazing box of road trip goodies that Wanda sent. Kristi forgot to take a picture of everything opened because she was happily weeping, but there are amazing treats like a road atlas, mad libs, a hiking bag and water bottle, stitch markers, pins, lollipops. I'm blown away by the love my friends have shown me at a very stressful point in my life. I can't thank you all enough!
